What is TEFL certification?
TEFL refers to Teaching English as a Foreign
Language. Our course provides teacher training for those who want
to live and teach in countries like China and Thailand, where English
is a foreign language and students have little daily exposure to it.
Our TEFL course equips native and near native-speakers to teach in
foreign classrooms. |

University Instruction in
a Real ESL Environment in the Heart of China”
Why English?
Never before has a language had so powerful a presence! English is
the primary language of world trade, business and management. It is
the global language of travel, tourism and hospitality. It is the
tongue of diplomacy and international cooperation. It is the speech
of global banking and Third World development. It is the language
of science, medicine, education and technology.
Dominant in almost every major human enterprise, English has rivals
but no equals. That is why governments, businesses and educational
institutions want their people to master this linguistic superpower.
That is also why TEFL certification provides unequalled opportunities
for language teachers to work and travel.
What is our Approach?
Our approach is known as communicative language teaching. This teaching
and learning system is widely accepted in Western countries, but has
only recently begun to take root in Asia. We see ourselves as part
of vanguard in a linguistic revolution. The principles taught in our
TEFL certification course can be used effectively in any country where
English is a foreign language. However, in our course we illustrate
these principles by using examples form the Thai language and Thai
culture. Our TEFL students frequently say the course has helped understand
Thailand better.
Course Overview
We offer university-standard instruction to native (or near-native)
speakers of English. So far, most of our students have sought careers
as English instructors and teachers in Thailand. Others, however,
have successfully applied for positions in other countries. Our TEL
program will prepare you to teach in any foreign classroom. You can
present the CMU TEFL certificate to prospective employers with confidence
and pride. Challenging but rewarding, our course has two parts.
TEFL Certificate Course Part One
Involves 75 hours of classroom instruction. In the classroom, we review
second-language acquisition theory; teaching approaches, methods and
techniques; student assessment, evaluation and testing; lesson and
unit planning; and material analysis and development. The classroom
sessions also cover phonetics and linguistics but they emphasize fundamental
English grammar. Our classes illustrate teaching activities you can
use to develop your students' listening, speaking, reading and writing
skills.
TEFL Certificate Course Part Two
The second is a 48-hour practicum. During the first week, we study
presentation skills, lesson planning and syllabus design. During the
following month, each week we spend ten hours in practice teaching
with a class of learners from Chiang Mai University. This schedule
enables each TEFL student to teach for at last four to six classroom
hours. When you are not conducting the practicum lesson yourself,
you will work individually with two Thai university students. This
provides valuable experience and helps develop your personal teaching
style.
Aims Of The TEFL Abroad Certificate Course
The aims of a TEFL Abroad TEFL course, as indicated above, are,
clearly, to provide trainees with the tools to do the job: to impart
the required knowledge of the theory of English Language Training,
coupled with the guidance and the means to put theory into practice.
Through a series of lectures, lessons, seminars, workshops, and
other activities we will create a model to help trainees use various
techniques, materials and methodology and apply them to teaching
real classes of real students.
We cover classroom management, lesson planning and provide a chance
for you to put these into action with genuine learners of English
from at least two different levels. In addition, we provide trainees
the chance to observe experienced teachers teaching actual classes.
TEFL Abroad Course Objectives
The objective of the TEFL Abroad course is to give trainees insights
into not only the workings of English, but also into language
acquisition via a foreign or unknown language. This illustrates and
demonstrate what a learner faces in the classroom, and will help you
understand the need for sensitivity towards students' needs and
recognition of their performance. It will show them, too, how
language can be used as a tool to bring about communication in the
fullest sense.
This can be achieved through practical instruction, projects, and
observed teaching practice.
